Habitat Facts
We believe everyone deserves simple, decent, affordable housing. Our mission,
as a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry, is to seek to eliminate
poverty housing by partnering with the community to make decent shelter
a matter of conscience and action.
Our affiliate was incorporated in 1988. The first family moved into a
Habitat home in Mobile in August 1990.
HFHMC has dedicated over 165 homes. A home currently costs $75,000 to
sponsor and 175 volunteers typically spend 2,500 hours working on a Habitat
home.
Habitat families are selected on the basis of need, willingness to partner
and the ability to repay a no-interest mortgage.
Area businesses, civic and educational organizations and congregations
of various denominations have sponsored Habitat houses.
The ReStore, a shop for building materials and home improvement items
was opened on Dauphin Island Parkway, February 2006 and moved to 4128
Government Blvd in 2008. We accept donations when the store is open.
A 15-member Board of Directors serving three-year terms govern our affiliate.
We also have a Collegiate Chapter at Spring Hill College.
We use 80% of our income for construction in Mobile County; pledge 10%
to Habitat International in Americus, Georgia to be used in construction
of homes in developing nations; and use 10% for administrative costs.
We are members in good standing with the Alabama Association of Habitat
Affiliates.
Our office is located in the Regions Bank Building, Suite 200. The mailing
address is: P.O. Box 16422 Mobile, AL 36616. We can be reached by telephone
at (251) 476-7171 - fax (251) 476-7978.
Habitat for Humanity in Mobile County is happy to accept donations of
